LA MOTHE LE VAYER (F. de).
De la Vertu des Payens.
A Paris, chez François Targa, 1642. 4to. 4 leaves. 374 pages. Full calf, boards ornamented with a gilt Du Seuil framing, posterior labels (contemporary binding slightly restored). First Edition dedicated to the Cardinal de Richelieu, perhaps the sponsor of the book, of one of the most controversial works of the celebrated sceptical philosopher François de La Mothe Le Vayer (1588-1672). This recovery of Antiquity's pagan philosophers, claiming more or less obviously that ever since his fall, man finds enough strength in himself to save his soul without Jesus (see Busson), was not only a theological and philosophical treatise (with a chapter on "Confucius, the Socrates of China") but also a political book serving Richelieu's interests in his fight against the jansenist doctrine. Pages 371-374 were added in a hurry when the book was already printed, to clarify some of the author's statements: "Comme les dernières feüilles de ce livre rouloient déjà sous la Presse, on m'a donné advis que quelques personnes qui aboient eu la curiosité de les voir à mesure qu'on les tiroit, s'étoient scandalisées de ce que j'escris en la page 74 ". Ancient signature scraped on the title page (repaired), with anothe signature crossed out "Moreau". Manuscript inscription: "J. de Bonne. Col. Acheté à la vente Bazin à Paris en 1853 me revient à dix francs". Beautiful copy in a nice binding in Du Seuil style. Jammes, Libertins Erudits, 227. Tchemerzine, VI, 483. Pintard, 845. [Attributes: First Edition]
Bookseller: Librería Comellas [Barcelona, Spain]
