Philadelphia: Printed for the Subscribers by Robert Bell, 1772. Full Leather. Good binding. Book the Fourth only of the First American Edition of Blackstone's Commentaries, with (according to OCLC) an erroneous date on the title page of DCCLXXII. In contemporary calf, with loss at the spine. The front joint is cracked by holding well. Morocco title label is chipped. There is silverfishing to the pastedown and the edges of the first several leaves. With a subscriber's list and tipped in advertisement by the publisher for Ferguson's Essay on the History of Civil Society; this advertisement notes that the Second American Edition of Blackstone is being issued in Quarto and allows "Those gentlemen who were subscribers to the First Edition in Octavo, and now chose to possess the Quarto Edition, shall have their October [if not abused] exchanged for the Quarto, on paying the difference between the Prices." One does wonder how many availed themselves of this offer.~~This copy has association with the Byrd family of Virginia,. On the pastedown is the signature of Mary Willing Byrd, the second wife of William Byrd III, and quite a remarkable woman in her own right -- she navigated the American and the Tory sides in the American Revolution with skill and some cunning. Also are the signatures of two of William Byrd III sons -- Wm.
