Kyoto. Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
New York: Riverside, , 1968. Signed by Blakey and a quartet of Messengers 12-inch vinyl LP (Riverside 673 013), new plain paper sleeve, original album cover. A little wear to corners of album cover, general light signs of handling, disc in excellent condition, overall very good. Boldly signed across the back cover by Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Cedar Walton, and Reggie Workman, and thus highly appealing and unusual in capturing anything like a complete line-up of Messengers. The band were enormously popular in Japan, touring there annually in the 70s, and Kyoto, recorded on 20 February 1964, is something of a tribute to the country; two standout cuts being Hubbard's eponymous title track, and a staple of the band's repertoire, Sadao Watanabe's vamp-based "Nihon Bash". This is a re-issue of the original 1966 release, which would explain the absence of Shorter's signature, as he had left Blakey to join Miles in September 1964.
Bookseller: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. [London, United Kingdom]
