**Original genealogical manuscript by the Mexican writer Captain Antonio Fernández Lechuga**
1688. *Origen de la yllustrisima casa de Morales y las agregadas a ellas. A Andrés Maldonado de Morales vezino de Mexico. Escríbelo y dedícalo el capitán Antonio Fernández Lechuga. Mexico, 6 July 1688*Manuscript 24 leaves written on both sides. Great Folio Original parchment, creased, some staining, with ties. Some restoration to the upper margin throughout. Some dampstaining and browning.Large handwriting. Four headings in colour representing mythological figures and three full page portraits, all of them in a powerful naïve Mexican style. Twenty six coats of arms of different branches of the family and in different sizes. Although Fernández Lechuga must have written other genealogies, this is apparently the first to have reached the market.Captain Antonio Fernández Lechuga who was born in Puebla de los Angeles. He was the eldest of three brothers, all writers. Guillermo de Tovar y de Teresa describes him as: 'Poblano, historiador genealogista y poeta, representa el tipo de novohispano clásico del siglo XVII' (Tovar p. 301). Fernández Lechuga is also the author of a book of poems published in 1650 (Medina, Imprenta en Puebla de los Angeles, 28). He is also the author of Memorioso recuerdo a la venida del virrey Manuel de la Cerda which celebrated the arrival in Mexico of the new Viceroy in 1680. This was the occasion for which Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz wrote her Neptuno Alegórico.This manuscript shows Fernández Lechuga´s vast knowledge of genealogy.
