A new chart of the Coast of Brazil from Maranham to Rio de Janeiro
A quintessential British chart of the Brazilian Coast, with inset maps of the most important Provinces. 1819. London. Working nautical chart with pencil notes, cleaned and backed in new linen, a few wormholes barely perceptible. 1320 mm x 660 mm. Norie’s is a splendid map of the coast of Brazil, extending from the Marañon to Rio de Janeiro. Features six inset maps of Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro from the harbor, Bahia, S. Marcos Bay, Fernando de Noronha and S. Louis de Maranham; and coastal profiles that aided navigators identify important landmarks. The cartouche is highly decorative and shows an agricultural theme. By the time the chart was published, Brazil was already a considerable power, fomented by the fact that the Portuguese court had moved to Rio de Janeiro after being “expelled” from Portugal, reestablishing in the colonial seat of Rio. This decision, along with the considerable development Brazil would undertake in the early 19th century, brought an ever-growing interest in the region from Europeans: this chart reflects that. The chart was first compiled under William Heather in 1810; this is a new edition, which contains updates and revisions. Extremely rare, only one other copy in OCLC, a fact that might be explained by the fact that Norie is known for publishing more specific regional charts of Brazil in the 1820’s.
