W Warszawie [Warsaw]: u. N. Glucksberga, Księgarza i Typografa Krolewskiego Uniwersytetu [N. Glücksberg], 1819. Rozprawa chinskiego mandaryna Chen-Uei o kobietach. Z Języka Chińskiego na ruski przez Xięcia Karykoff, z Ruskiego na francuzki przez A. D. z Francuzkiego zaś na polski ięzyk przez I. M. *** przetłómaczona.First edition of this scarce Polish work concerning women's rights and their role in society."Discourse of the Chinese Mandarin Chen-Uei on Women" was written by an anonymous author, claiming that the work is translated from Chinese to Russian, from Russian to French and eventually from French into Polish. The work is considered as a counter-reaction to the increasing appearance of women in public and literary life and expresses concern about the future if women gain more rights or get more active in social and cultural matters. The book was assumably a success among the Polish readers, and a second edition was published in 1822 by the same publisher.Scarce, we could trace only one copy in institutional holdings in Wrocław, Poland (Ossolineum).First edition. In contemporary hard paper, with title vignette on spine. [4], [1]-199, [1] p. Possessor's inscription on the title page. Binding rubbed at extremities, with wormholes at the joint of the spine, corners bumped, still firm. Occasional stains on the pages. Underlines and erased notes in pencil throughout, but more in the first part. Overall in very good condition.
