Birds, Jardine's NaturalistÂ’s Library, Hummingbirds]; Jardine William
Edinburgh W. H. Lizars [1833]. 2 volumes. Engraved portrait in each volume, one of Pennant and one of Linnaeus. 68 very fine hand-coloured engravings of birds presented as full page plates and with numerous woodcuts throughout. 8vo, handsomely bound in fine three quarter polished calf over marbled boards, the spines with raised bands gilt stopped, the compartments lettered in gilt and tooled with images of birds as centerpieces gilt. [12],xxxi, 25-191, [12] ad; 1-192 pp. An unusually nice set. Very handsome and beautifully preserved. SCARCE. A beautiful set with fine hand-colored engravings. Jardine was the author of many naturalist books and wrote a number of the "Jardine Library" books. This particular title is especially elusive and sets in such condition are rarely encountered. The bird portraits present a good number of the very exotic hummingbirds as well as the common but extremely colourful birds included in most studies. A fine study and presentation, especially important to collectors of ornithology as well as to collectors of fine bird books. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
