Original dark blue-green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, panels blocked in blind, sides with wide frame blocked in blind, gilt admiralty motif at centre, cream endpapers, Remnant & Edmonds binder's ticket. With 2 folding maps, unnumbered leaf "Appendix No. 5" inserted at p. 98, Murray's adverts for other similar titles on the last leaf verso, 32pp. catalogue of publisher's adverts at rear dated January 1852. Gift inscription to Alec B. Camplin dated 1912 on front free endpaper. Extremities worn, joints split in places, inner hinges cracked but held by linen, one later gathering roughly opened, a good copy only. Second edition, including on pp. 166-204 Charles Darwin's article, "Geology". In the first issue, Darwin's article had several errors corrected with a 20-page cancel inserted in a pocket inside the rear board. The second issue has the corrections made within the text. "This useful book... went through six editions, remaining in print until 1906. Professor James Geikie's high opinion of Darwin's article on geology is given in Life and Letters, Vol. I, pp. 328-29 (Freeman)." From the library of Alec B. Camplin (1800-1971). In the 1920s and 30s Camplin worked as an engineer for the American-owned Shanghai Power Company. He held several university degrees, most achieved by correspondence. Left-wing and homosexual, he was reputed to have one of the best libraries among the expatriates in Shanghai, with over 5,000 books. Freeman 328.
