Leonardo da Vinci; Alberti, Leon Battista
Trattato della Pittura [and] Della Pittura, Della Statua
1733. Leonardo da Vinci; Alberti, Leon Battista. Trattato della Pittura [and] Della Pittura, Della Statua. Naples: Francesco Ricciardo 1733. Also Paris: Giacomo Langlois (see below). [16], 115, [10], 55p, many engraved ills. and decorations. Full polished leather. A little old worming and stains to margins of 4 pages toward the end; small hole to spine label; otherwise overall internally very good. Title page printed in red and black. With bookplate reading "Otiis Comitis Fontanellati &c.," printed within a shield below a crown. (The National Library of Medicine holds a 1601 title with the same bookplate.) ** The second Italian edition of Leonardo's Trattato, following a few extremely rare 1723 copies. This edition is notable for the addition of Nicolas Poussin's "Osservazioni sopra la Pittura." Leonardo's treatise on painting and Alberti's treatises on painting and sculpture are each preceded by a life by Raphael du Fresne and a large portrait. The Paris date on the title page is corrected in red ink, as called for by Steinitz, but it's unclear (to me) why it would be corrected to 1701. ** Supplied with a fine copy of Kate Trauman Steinitz's bibliography, Leonardo da Vinci's Trattato della Pittura (Munksgaard,1958). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
Bookseller: Robin Bledsoe, Bookseller (ABAA) [Cambridge, MA, U.S.A.]
