Different testimonies manuscripts and signatures, with different dates in 1680.Documents of the Inquisitorial investigation of the alleged denial of God by the Mulatto slave Francisco Arias, undertaken by the comisario of the Holy Inquisition, the Dominican Fray Diego de Mendoza. Fray Diego was a priest in the Convent of Santo Domingo in Tlaltizapán in the modern state of Morelos. Although he was a priest 'ministro de doctrina' primarily in charge of religious teaching in his village he was at the same time comisario de la Inquisicion, an occupation which he was rarely called upon to practice until the case of Arias was denounced to him. Following the general instructions of the Inquisition he appointed a notary, a fellow Dominican Juan Muñoz, who was to keep an official record of the inquiry to assist him. He went on to the ingenio of San Francisco de Temilpa, an important ingenio dedicated to the production of sugar cane, where he took testimony of the Mulatto Arias and several witnesses. Arias was a slave of the proprietor of the ingenio captain Martin Garcia de Tobar. It turned out that Arias had escaped and when he was flogged as punishment by order of the Ingenio 's administrator, Jose de Bueno, at the first strokes he had denied God, the holy sacrament, the Virgin and all the Saints. Fray Diego reports that his fellow slaves were scandalised.
