MORNAY (Philippe de, Sieur du Plessis-Marly).
De la Vérité de la Religion Chrestienne: contre les Athées, Epicuriens, Juifs, Mahumedistes, et autres Infidèles. Seconde édition reveûe par l'Autheur.
A Anvers, de l'Imprimerie de Christofle Plantin, 1582. 8vo. 16 leaves. 774 pages. 1 leaf. Full red morocco, flat ornamented spine, double gilt frame on boards with angular fleurons and gilt cipher "FMDB" in the center (contemporary binding, reminiscent of the bindings made for Henri III) Very rare edition of one of the most famous Protestant French texts. Published by Plantin nearly ten years after the St. Bartholomew's Day massacre, this work of reaffirmation of the superiority of the Christian religion over other religions, Islam in particular, was unanimously accepted by both Protestants and Catholics. The author was one of the closest friends and advisers to Henry, King of Navarre and future Henry IV, to whom the book is dedicated. This second edition is the first in octavo format. It is just as rare as the original 4to published the previous year by the very same printer. Foxing quite strong but a beautiful copy bound in red morocco at the turn of the 17th century. It bears the gilt monogram "FMDB" at the centre of each boards and a handwritten inscription on the last paste down endpaper: "Besiers 1623. Bonnefous". It probably belonged to a member of the Bonnefous family, who gave several lawyers to the city of Béziers in the 17th and 18th centuries. Brunet, III, 1911. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
