A red seal of "Ren Ruitu" on title page and last page. Insect holes on a few pages. A few foxing. Otherwise in very good condition. This rare work is a small encyclopedia with 24 sections, divided into 200 lessons, explaining the basic doctrines of Christianity and the basics of Western learning. A textbook for students to learn English and an enlightening book for people to understand the West. The work was initially translated in Chinese characters by James Legge in 1856 from Charles Baker's "the circle of knowledge" (1848). This book is the reprinted and improved edition in 1864. The preface is in English and is signed "J.L." for James Legge (1815-1897), the famous British missionary who lived in Hong Kong and used the Chinese name Liyage.
