Gendai ryôki sentan zukan (Pictorial of the Modern, Curiosity Hunting, and the Avant-Garde)
Shinchosha, ?? (Tokyo), 1931. Quarto. 4, [2], 246, [2], 46, [2]pp. Original silver-stamped olive cloth, with gold lettering to front cover and spine. Decorative endpapers. Top edge gilt. Book housed in its publisher's Art-Deco illustrated slipcase. During the 1920s and 1930s photographs from the German New Objectivity and Bauhaus design movements circulated around the world via illustrated mass magazines and books. In China and Japan the New Photography was, in part, spread through pictorials that featured the works of avant-garde European artists, such as Hannah Höch, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Aleksandr Rodchenko, and Umbo. East Asian magazine designers of publications and books, such as our "Gendai ryoki sentan zukan" (Pictorial of the Modern, Curiosity Hunting, and the Avant-Garde), reproduced images from Western Europe and the Soviet Union. Filled with hundreds of striking b/w and color photographs and illustrations divided into several categories (erotica, grotesque, cabarets and revues, sport, avant-garde, and more), this rare Japanese photobook evokes with equal interest the avant-garde fashions and revues of Berlin, Paris, and Tokyo and the "exotic" practices of faraway places, such as Tibetan beliefs in "grotesque" skeleton deities (page 78), and the Senegalese custom of chieftains having multiple wives (page 77). Also includes photographs of people with full-body tattoos (pp. 91-93), Hannah Höch's photomontages (pp. 214-215), a still from Fritz Lang's masterpiece "Metropolis" (page 197), Jan Willem Eduard Buijs and Joan B. Lürsen's De Volharding building (page 199), etc … [Click Below for Full Description]
