Kruszewski, Józef
Cover Title:] Emigracya do Ameryki. Album wedlug akwarel J. Kruszewskiego. Auswanderung nach Amerika. Album nach Aquarellen von J. Kruszewski. [Emigration to America. An Album with Aquarelles by J. Kruszewsky.]
Fr. Ryszard Werner (Lit. M. Salba), Krakow, 1888. First edition. 8 lithographs by Józef Kruszewski. Captions in Polish, German and Hungarian. In original, illustrated envelope, printed in black and red. 8 lithograph plates.320×475 mm. Extremely scarce complete album of anti-Semitic cartoons, telling the story of the Polish emigration to the USA. The pictures are showing Jewish people trying to make money out of Polish emigration efforts. The eight, mocking lithographs are telling a consecutive story of Poles looking for a better future but are apparently tricked by Jews. The illustrations were made by Józef Kruszewski, at the end of the 19th Century, when polish mass-immigration to the United States peaked. Józef Wincenty Kruszewski (1853-1920) was a Polish painter, illustrator and caricaturist. He created numerous caricatures often with Jewish themes in watercolors. Extremely scarce, WorldCat locates only one copy in the Polish National Library. Rear flap of envelope is missing. Edges of cover are chipped and torn with some loss. Small tears throughout. Some corners creased. Otherwise in very good condition. First edition. 8 lithographs by Józef Kruszewski. Captions in Polish, German and Hungarian. In original, illustrated envelope, printed in black and red. [Attributes: First Edition]
