Lilford, Lord.
Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Islands.
1st. Ed. Pub. R.H. Porter, London. 1885-1897. Seven volume set. With photogravure portrait frontis. Extra-illustrated set with 446 hand-coloured and chromolithographed plates. Royal 8vo. TEG. Minor marginal spotting, o/w. contents fine. Neat pencil numeral in corner of each plate. Original half morocco leather over marbled boards bound by R.H. Porter. Raised bands and lettered in gilt to spine. All in near fine condition, spines gently, evenly, sunned as is usual for this leather, very gently rubbed to extremities. A very pleasing and unique set. Preferred first edition which normally comprises 421 plates. This set contains an additional 25 plates in different states, essentially duplicates, for example there are two versions of Plate No. 42 - Turtle Dove. Some present the bird in a different pose, some have differing colouring, or a combination of these two attributes. Radclyffe noted that some sets ‘are occasionally found bound up with various cancelled plates that had not met the author’s approval’. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
