Augustus, Duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenberg; Emile Leopold Augustus
Ein Jahr in Arkadien: Kyllenion
Jena, Germany: Frommann and Wesselhöft, 1805. First Edition. First edition. [ii], 124, [2] pp. with fold-out illustration at front and illustration at rear of two naked men grasping the strings of a lyre. In German. Original marbled brown wraps with near contemporary hand-lettered spine label. A Good+ copy with wear and rubbing along wraps, loss at head and tail, light tidemark through contents, a few small stains and indents to prelims, small mend to title page, terminals trimmed shorter. Rare. A Year in Arcadia is the first novel to feature a male same-sex relationship, written by German nobleman Emile Leopold Augustus (1772-1822) and published anonymously. It is a pastoral tale set in ancient Greece, a common setting for tales of male friendship and generally taboo sexuality at the time. One of the several couples whose romance is described herein is homosexual, which was considered very scandalous at the time, but (perhaps most remarkably) their romance is handled as if it were no different than the others. A landmark work of gay fiction. Good+. [Attributes: First Edition]
