Photo Album of Buick Factory in Flint, Michigan [1919-1921]
1919. Photo album that depicts the construction of Buick factory buildings and family outings in Flint, Michigan and surrounding area. Album contains approximately 315 b&w photos; all are corner mounted and almost all have captions in white ink; photos measure 3 ¼" x 5". About 80 of the photos are dedicated to the Buick factory, the remaining are family images. Flexible black album covers have moderate chipping and soiling; pastedown and first leaf have moderate soiling, other leaves have light soiling. There are a handful of missing photos and some have light soiling and wear; some have detached from corner mounts but are still present. Photos are numbered 275-566 (5 leaves of photos are unnumbered). The important content of this album features the construction of Buick factory buildings in Flint, Michigan; almost all are captioned with building/plant number and date. Buildings depicted include Buick #28 (1919); Buick #15 (1919); Buick #17 (1919); Buick Power House (1920-1921); Buick #11 (1920); Buick Tunnel (1920); Buick Spray Pond (1921). Images show the construction of the buildings, workers (working, having lunch, taking a nap) and one image depicts the Buick Power House from the top of a smoke stack (225ft!). Also featured are images of living quarters and camps for Buick workers including the bachelor¬ís quarters, Colored Camp, and Italian Camp, and the construction of the Durant Hotel in 1919 (2 photos). These buildings may be part of the massive automobile manufacturing complex later known as Buick City.
