"Best picture of Illinois pioneer life" (Howes). "The book deals extensively with social, economic, and political conditions in the pioneer period and with the Black Hawk War. a good picture of frontier society" (Buck). Also contains several chapters on Mormonism, including its history, belief system, and Joseph Smith's death. Howes states that "of 400 copies printed, 300 burned in the first Chicago fire while stored with D.B. Cooke in 1857. Reynolds was governor of Illinois.
