Les Souverains de l'Europe
H. Rousseau, (France, 1846. A set of three hand-colored wooden jigsaw puzzles lithographed by J. Froment and measuring 13 by 10 inches (33x25cm). Each puzzle is illustrated with six portraits of European rulers, in full regalia, with detailed jewels, orders, decorations, and crowns. Among the countries represented are Portugal, Russia, France, England, Austria, Spain, Greece, and even the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the short-lived monarchy of Sardinia. An intricate gold-printed border surrounds each portrait. Beautifully preserved in the original three-layered box, with the original cardboard reinforcements and their ribbon handles between the puzzles. The lid shows a handsome color lithograph of coats-of-arms, ribbons, garlands, and ornamental titling, with touches of hand-coloring. A luxury set of instructional puzzles for the lucky Victorian child. Box shows discreet repairs at the corners, with wear along the edges and some staining to lid. Puzzles are a touch foxed, but otherwise fine and bright.
