George Herbert Massey Franklin was the nephew of George Herbert Lings and his great uncle was Herbert Massey. Both these men were very well respected oologists and George went on to follow in their footsteps. He was a member of the British Oological Association (now the Jourdain Society) and some of his work proved to be of considerable scientific value, including his specimens of Peregrine Falcon Eggs. In the early 1990s, George decided that given his age (approaching 90) that his collection would be better looked after by someone else and offered it up to Jim Whitaker. Jim took on the collection and helped to conserve it with the long term intention of passing it on to a Museum. In 1995, Jims house was raided by West Yorkshire Police and the RSPB who confiscated the collection despite being legally held by Jim. A lengthy and costly court case ensued after which Jim was given back most of the collection.
