MOLESWORTH, Mrs (Mary Louisa)
My Pretty" And Her Little Brother "Too"
Chambers, London & Edinburgh, 1901. Mrs Molesworth, of Scottish heritage (1839 - 1921), typified late Victorian writing for girls. Aimed at girls too old for fairies and princesses but too young for Austen and the Brontes, her books had their share of amusement, but they also included a good deal of moral instruction. Her writing emphasized Victorian notions of duty and self-sacrifice. She is best known for books such as Tell Me A Story, The Cuckoo Clock, The Tapestry Room, A Christmas Child and The Carved Lions and has been called the "Jane Austen of the nursery". This is a particularly fine copy of this Victorian children's title and, remarkably, it still retains its ultra-rare original pictorial dustwrapper which is in very good condition with just a small piece missing from the base of the spine. Dustwrappers were only just beginning to be introduced in the early 1900s, so this is a genuine rarity. Scans available on request [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
