UK: Humphrey Milford, London, 1918. The First UK printing published By Humphrey Milford, London in 1918. The BOOK is in exceptional near Fine condition with just a little offsetting to the end papers. The boards are clean and the printed label to the spine is intact and only very slightly toned. 2 photogravure portraits by Emery walker and 2 double-page facsimiles. Inscribed by the Poet Laureate John Masefield to Laurence Hodson on the front blank endpaper: ' For, L. W. Hodson, from J. Masefield, New Year'. Accompanied by a signed letter, tipped in to the front pastedown : 'My dear Hodson, You may like knobbly bones of poetry to scrunch with your mind : I do myself ; so here is a knobbly one for you : which I admire very much , for all its' wilfulness, best greetings, yours ever, John Masefield'. The recipient of the inscription and letter was Laurence W. Hodson who was an art collector and patron of William Morris and other leading 'Arts and Crafts' movement artists. He was also the co-founder of 'The Essex House Press'. The first published collection of Hopkins' work which posthumously rescued him from obscurity. Only a few of his poems were published in his lifetime and he destroyed much of his work on entering the priesthood. Scarce with such attributes and in such exceptional condition.
