First Edition thus. 8vo (8.5 x 5.5 ins); [2], 70 pp. With two engraved portrait plates of Hans Holbein and Wenceslaus Hollar ('etchd by Barton') and 31 coloured plates engraved by Hollar after Holbein, each behind a tissue-guard. Bound in full, dark red crushed morocco, gilt spine with raised bands, sides decorated in gilt and blind; all edges gilt. Occasional minor spot of rubbing to edges and tips of corners. With the bookplate of Henry Charles Blaksley (1839-1922), born in Lambeth, stockbroker and resident of Clapham Road, London, later Boscombe, Dorset. A Fine copy. The theme of the "Danse macabre" dates back to medieval morality tales of a dialogue between Death and representatives from all classes of society, as well as paintings on the walls of churches and charnel houses.
