Rodwell & Martin, London, 1822. 3 1/4 X 5 Inches. 244 PP. NY Senator and Secretary of State under U.S. Grant - Hamilton Fish's PERSONAL COPY of Horace. Copious notes from Fish, the 16 year old Columbia College student in pencil throughout. Signed "Hamilton Fish / New York, March 24th / Columbia College / 1824" in ink on half-title page. Also signed in ink at top of page one: "Hamilton Fish." As U.S.Grant's longest serving Cabinet Member and the United States Secretary of State for eight years, there is little doubt that Fish's study of both latin and the works of Horace would have aided in his duties as an International negotiator and Statesman. The book itself - Quinti Horatii Flacci Opera (Latin), sedula recensione accurate. (Londini: Sumtibus Rodwell et Martin [and 7 others] excudit T. Davison, 1822), also by Johann Carl Zeune. Full calf period leather. Hinges are weak, with front hinge haning by a thread. The binding is rubbed, worn and age toned. Hamilton Fish (1808-1893), was an American statesman and politician who served as the 16th Governor of New York, A US Senator and United States Sec. of State. Fish is recognized as the "Pillar" of the Grant Administration and considered one of the best US Secretaries of State by scholar. Fish is noted for his controversial settlement of the Alabama claims as well as keeping the US out of war with Spain during the struggle for Cuban independence. In 1875, Fish initiated the process that would ultimately lead to Hawaiian statehood, by having negotiated a reciprocal trade treaty for the island's sugar production.
