Austen, Jane]
Printed for T. Egerton, London, 1817. Third edition of Austen's best loved novel, the first printed in two volumes (as opposed to the three volumes of previous editions) and the final edition issued by the novel's first publisher. All the early editions of this novel, widely considered one of the best in the English language, are rare and highly sought. The third edition, published the year of Austen's death, would be the last in England until Richard Bentley revived her novels for a new generation of Victorian readers in the 1830s. This copy has been bound in lovely moire silk boards: silk run while wet through rollers that impress a faint rippled pattern onto it. During the Regency, this fabric was popular for use in women's gowns. An excellent copy, retaining the half titles. Two 12mo volumes, 6.75'' x 4'' each. 19th century moire silk green boards sympathetically rebacked, one volume with the original spine laid down, the other in period style to match, red goatskin spine labels (one renewed). Red speckled text block edges. Half titles present, lacking blank O2 at end of vol. I. [4], 289, [1]; [4], 311, [1] pages. Small contemporary ink owner name on front fly leaf of each volume. Light scattered foxing. A bit of rubbing and bumping to boards, original spine toned with chipped original label. Watered silk still vividly green. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
