Original three-sheet poster for Dracula.
New York: c. 1977. Gorey, Edward. Two-panel printed poster, measuring 41 by 82 3/4 inches. Printed to advertise the 1977 Broadway production of Dracula, the main section of the poster features an illustrated scene showing Dracula about to ravish Lucy Westenra, who lies atop a bed that has as its tapestry headboard the marquee for the play, showing Frank Langella in the title role, Dennis Rosa as the director, and the performances taking place at the Martin Beck Theater. A trio of skull-headed putti holds up the the marquee, flanked by a bevy of bats -- all of which takes place under an ominous sky filled with clouds. The smaller top panel contains brief excerpts from three reviews with a continuation of the night sky for the scene below, complete with more menacing clouds and a skull-moon. Gorey won a Tony award for his costume designs for this production in 1978. Faint wrinkling edges, otherwise a fine example of an ephemeral artifact from this ground-breaking production.
