Spine slightly rolled, ends and extremities rubbed, binding firm and square, internally clean; a very good copy in the dust jacket, gently creased to head of spine. 8 lithographic colour plates of illustrations and further black and white illustrations in text by Alan Lee, red and black map of Beleriand by Christopher Tolkien at rear. First edition, first impression, signed by both the editor and illustrator on a bookplate to the front free endpaper. From the library of Christopher Lee, though unmarked as such, who played the role of Saruman in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films. Tolkien wrote the original version of this novel in 1910 and, although revising it several times, never completed it before his death in 1973. Tolkien's son, Christopher Tolkien, edited the manuscripts into a coherent narrative and published them as an independent work. This edition also includes several genealogical tables relating to Middle Earth lore and a redrawn map of Beleriand by Christopher Tolkien. Alan Lee has illustrated a number of Tolkien works, including the centenary edition of The Lord of the Rings and the 1999 publication of The Hobbit, and was one of the lead concept artists for Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films. Peter Jackson explained that Alan Lee's art "captured what I hoped to capture with the films", and it is therefore Lee's conception of Middle Earth that is perhaps most familiar to twenty-first century audiences.
