CHURCHILL, [Sir] Winston Spencer (1874-1965)
My African Journey
London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1908. [Colonial African Topography] FINELY BOUND FIRST EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[2] xiv; 226 [18]. With 61 illustrations from photographs by the author and Lieutenant-Colonel Gordon Wilson, and three maps. Modern brown half morocco circa 1970s, with gilt titles and black tooling to spine, and marbled paper over boards. Original decorated red cloth front cover laid over front pastedown. Toning and spotting to edges and preliminaries. Occasional spots and marks throughout. In an attractive modern binding, perhaps a touch sunned to spine. Very good. Originally serialised in the Strand Magazine, Churchill's account of British territory in East Africa represents the author at his journalistic best. Because it was written, or perhaps dictated, on the spot, it echoes much of the freshness to be found in 'Malakand Field Force' and is a showcase for Churchill's powers of observation. 'My African Journey' may not be among his best-known works but is certainly one of his best.
