Fine mezzotint portrait engraving by Johann Jakob Haid (1704-1767) after the painting by Johann Solomon Wahl (1689-1763)
[?Augsburg], 1746. Folio (315 x 190 mm) plus good margins. A very good impression on laid paper. Some very minor spotting; small tear to upper blank right corner of margin repaired with archival tape; three small wormholes to lower right edge of blank margin. In very good condition overall. Mattheson, composer, theorist, and close friend of Handel, "was the most important contemporary writer on the music of the German Baroque." George J. Buelow in Grove Music Online. His circle included Telemann, and he "praised the famous organist at Weimar Herr John. Sebastian Bach in his treatise Das beschützte Orchestre."
