Asfer et Sato Chez les F.F.I.
Ceux de la Résistance, (France), 1944. Folio. (57)pp. A children's picture book that follows two demons who escape Hell, help a battalion of French Forces of the Interior (F.F.I.), and make trouble for the Nazis. Eventually the demons and their companion, a small flame, assist the F.F.I. in the liberation of a small town (a caption at the bottom of the last page of the story states "Moulins, le 4 octobre 1944," but it is unclear whether this note refers to the town liberated or the place the volume was printed). The F.F.I. refers to French resistance fighters, as opposed to the regular Free French forces, in the later stages of World War II. This present volume was published by the Ceux de la Resistance, one of eight major resistance movements that made up France's National Council of the Resistance. This edition was issued for Christmas 1944, after an autumn spent successfully liberating much of France from Axis forces. Bound in quarter-cloth with the demons playing on the Cross of Lorraine and a victory "V" on the upper cover. General wear to edges, corners bumped, boards a bit bowed, else a near fine copy of a scarce book, especially remarkable for having been published by a group more given to pamphlets and newsletters.
