Two volumes in 12mo (155 mm x 90 mm). 1 [blank] + frontispiece + 1 ff. + 512; frontispiece, 1 ff. + 515 + 12 engraved plates –including portrait of the author. Contemporary calf gilt, raised bands to spine with morocco lettering-pieces, all tooled in gilt, very good. A handsome copy, only lightly browned.First French edition. Schouten (1638 – 1704) was a Dutch sailor, surgeon and explorer who sailed for the Dutch East India Company. The present work is an extensive account of his experiences during his time serving for the VOC in Batavia, Ceylon, the Moluccas islands and other parts of South East Asia, published first in Dutch –also in German-, in 1676, from which this French translation was prepared. A popular work, most copies survive of the later, 1725 edition.
