FREUD, Sigmund
Totem und Tabu
Published by Hugo Heller & Cie, Leipzig & Wien, 1913. THE FIRST GERMAN EDITION (Precedes the English edition by 5 years) IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLISHERÂ’S WRAPPERS. Tall octavo. [vi]+149+[1]pp. Original printed gray wrappers with black lettering. Early owner's ink signature to the top of the front wrapper, lower corner creased, slight creasing to the upper corner of the first several leaves. First edition in book form. The first application of psychoanalysis to anthropology, ""Totem and Taboo"" remains one of Freud's more controversial works. Freud here responds to Jung's renunciation of the Oedipus complex by attempting to show that the very possibility of civilization requires it -- themes later elaborated by Levi-Strauss and Lacan. The English translation did not appear until 1918. Housed in a cloth slipcase with chemise. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
