Querelle (Original screenplay for the 1982 film)
Malibu, CA: Naxos Productions, 1979. First Draft script for the 1982 film. Text in English. Based on the 1947 novel. Querelle, a buff, bisexual Belgian sailor, arrives in Brest, where he plans to unload smuggled opium. He strikes a drug deal with a local bartender, although their encounter quickly becomes sexual. Meanwhile, Querelle's brother Robert, who is also in Brest, seeks Querelle's help in hiding his friend, a construction worker who has murdered his sexually abusive coworker. An astonishingly beautiful, fetishistic adaptation of a notoriously difficult-to-adapt author. Director Rainer Werner Fassbinder's final film. Set in France. Green titled faux-leather wrappers. Title page present, dated December 20, 1979, noted as FIRST DRAFT, with credits for screenwriter Burkhard Driest and novelist Jean Genet. 113 leaves, with last page of text numbered 111. Xerographic duplication, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, with light foxing, bound with two silver brads.
