Exquisite fully engraved portable atlas, featuring 29 hand-colored maps and 3 additional engraved spreads, in a blind-stamped contemporary German binding. Two elaborate allegorical copperplate engravings designed by Gottfried Eichler the Younger and engraved by Tobias Lobeck begin the text, followed by a splendid double-page hemisphere world map and a double-page planisphere map of the heavens designed by Lobeck and engraved by Tobias Lotter. Next follow hand-colored double-page maps of Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America, and details of individual countries, designed by Lobeck and engraved by Lotter. A splendid example of the Enlightenment-era portable atlas, carrying the world in one's pocket. 4.25'' x 2.75''. Contemporary full pigskin, elaborately blind-stamped. All edges gilt. Blue marble pastedowns, no free endpapers. 32 fully engraved double-page spreads mounted on stubs, of which 29 are hand-colored maps. Double-page engraved frontispiece, title page, and index at rear. Text in Latin. Housed in custom green silk brocade box with paper spine label. Rubbing to spine and a bit at edges, faint evidence of dampstaining to text largely only visible on versos, a few spots of staining at bottom edge at rear of text.
