Burr, David H.
Map of the City of New York
Printer and Engraver: S. Stiles and Co, 1840. With inked boundaries designating the land owned by the city's major property owners of the day, including names such as Astor (Minturn Astor specifically), Beekman, Brevoot, Delancey, Roosevelt, Rutgers, Bayard, Doyer, etc. Also among the landowners designated are Trinity Church and the Negro Burying Ground. Properties are numbered, with a handwritten key indicating the owner. While this information could be retrieved through assiduous study of published directories, this map captures with easy visual accessibility an important aspect of New York real estate at the moment the city was poised to experience explosive growth. We would add that the manuscript additions do nothing to diminish the beauty of the map as printed. N.d., circa 1840. Opened, map is 56 by 44.5 cm. Closed, 13.5 by 8.5 cm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
