A New Chart of the Straits of Sunda, from the Manuscript of the Dutch East India Company.
Laurie & Whittle, London, 1799. Sea chart. Uncolored copper plate engraving. Image measures 23.75" x 33 7/8". Beautifully detailed chart of the southern tip of Sumatra, the Strait of Java and part of Java. Includes rhumb lines, depths, shoals, a compass rose and an inset map: "Zutphen or Hounds Islands, off the East side of Hogs Point, enlarged." The coast lines are further illustrated with with several topographical cross sections. Published in "The East-India Pilot, or Oriental Navigator, on One Hundred and Eighteen Plates: Containing a Complete Collection of Charts and Plans, &c." (plate 95). Maps are based on the 1745 French "Neptune Oriental" by Jean Baptiste Nicolas Denis d'Apres de Mannevillette. The later English editions include additions by Captain Henry Smedley, Captain Parker and Captain John Hall. Minor offsetting and some chipping. Full original margins. The area is known for exception surfing waves, and a UNESCO world heritage site of lowland rainforest called Ujung Kulon National Park.
