South Riding: An English Landscape , Winifred Holtby, Collins, London, 1936, 1st edition. Octavo (205 x 150mm), 589 pages. No. 55 of a special edition limited to 175 copies, presented in quarter-vellum with cloth covers, gilt lettering and top-edge, encased in the original glassine wrapper and card presentation box. A hand-written limitation on the half-title page notes This edition of 175 copies has been printed for the author's friends with a personal introduction by Vera Brittain. This is number 55. The 55 number is also detailed on the original publisher s laid-in typed notice, and on the hand-numbered label on the presentation box. Holtby's masterpiece South Riding was published posthumously in 1936, following the author s untimely death the year before. This edition features a black-and-white frontispiece portrait of the author, and an epitaph entitled Ave Atque Vale (Hail and Farewell), written by her long-time friend and pacifist, Vera Brittain. The book was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1936. The presentation box shows some edgewear and a small mark to the top cover, otherwise unmarked.
