Original artwork for Neiman-Marcus/Bromer Booksellers Holiday catalogue
1994. Ink and watercolor drawing on paper measuring 11 1/2 by 13 1/2 inches. The image, which measures 9 1/2 by 11 1/2 inches, depicts a group of teddy bears poised around a decorated Christmas wreath, which is set against a medium blue wash. Signed in the lower right corner. There are nine bears, eight of which are paired off along the circumference of the wreath, and they are engaged in various holiday activities: the two at the bottom are having tea and cookies; the two pairs on either side are hanging ornaments and wrapping gifts; one of the pair at the top is addressing cards, while the other is reading a catalogue with a cover that looks just like this one. The single bear at the very center, bedecked in a long red scarf, is riding a unicycle while waving fans with bears on them. At the very bottom of the wreath is a lettering piece in which Gorey has written "The 1994 Christmas Book." In 1994, Gorey was asked by the retailer Neiman-Marcus to produce a design for the cover of their big holiday catalog. What they did not say, and what he later discovered, is that they had also asked other artists, so it was not a guaranteed, exclusive commission. It remained in Gorey's possession when Anne Bromer visited him two years later, at which point she asked whether she could buy it to use as the cover artwork for Bromer Booksellers' 1996 Holiday catalogue, to which he agreed. Included with this artwork is an overlay for the lettering piece, in Gorey's hand, reading: Season's Greetings/ 1996/Bromer Booksellers. This was intended to be placed over the original NM lettering piece … [Cliquez ci-dessous pour une description complète]
