Chouteau, A[uguste] P[ierre] (1785-1838)
EXTENSIVE MANUSCRIPT NOTE OF INDEBTEDNESS signed by Auguste P. Chouteau, given to Pierre Chouteau, Jr. for $66,000 contracted with the firm of Berthold and Chouteau in 1818. Signed at St. Louis, March 23, 1838.
Single sheet, 32 x 20.5 cm., approx. 350 words, in a clerical hand, signed by A.P Chouteau, of the state of Arkansas, who acknowledges his debt to Pierre Chouteau, as the surviving partner of the late firm of Berthold and Chouteau. The document is also signed by John F.A. Sanford as witness, and J.W. Walsh, Justice. The fur trading son of one of the founders of St. Louis, A. P. Chouteau died heavily in debt about nine months after signing this substantial instrument of debt to his half-brother. According to DAB, upon his death Indian and white creditors began to seize his property, "which would have been wholly dispersed but for the intervention of friends.
