Kipling, Rudyard
Burwash Edition of the Complete Works in Prose and Verse of Rudyard Kipling (28 vol. set)
Doubleday, Doran & Company, Inc., United States, 1941. Complete 28 volume set all in good to very good condition. First volume is signed by the author. Set is numbered 562 out of 1010. Red cloth boards with image of house embossed in gilt on cover. Gilt lettering and geometric design on spine. Deckle fore-edge and gilt top stain. All volumes have mild to moderate soiling and at least slight rubbing to edges and corners of boards. All show sunning to spine while a few volumes are starting to fray at head and tail of spine. Some volumes have damp stains on boards that do not extend to the text block. Most volumes have cracked gutters with binding that is beginning to loosen. None have pages separated. All text blocks are clean and very readable. This set of books collects the complete works of British novelist, poet, and Nobel Prize winner Rudyard Kipling. Though it had been planned since 1929, the collection was not published until 1941, five years after Kipling's death. Hugely popular in his time for works such as the novel The Jungle Book and the poem Mandalay, Kipling has since become a moe controversial literary figure. Kipling was born in India, which inspired much of his writing. His advocacy for imperialism and blatant jingoism have tarnished his legacy, but Kipling's narrative gifts and wide-spread influence keep the author relevant into the modern era.
