YEATS, W. B.
The Golden Helmet.
New York: published by John Quinn, [June] 1908. New York: published by John Quinn,, [June] 1908. Small octavo. Original boards, title label to front. Light wear at extremities and splitting to joints but all holding, lightly toned, contents clean. A very good copy. First edition, number 1 of 50 copies privately printed by John Quinn, Yeats's American patron, this copy inscribed by Quinn to his sister on the half-title: "To Julia with love from John May 6, 1908". The Golden Helmet is the rare first appearance, here in prose, of the Cuchullain play that would eventually be reworked into verse as "The Green Helmet" and published in The Green Helmet and Other Poems (Cuala Press, 1910). The play was first conceived in 1907, in the aftermath of the Abbey Theatre riots over Synge's Playboy of the Western World, and was produced at the Abbey Theatre 19 March 1908, where Yeats himself took a curtain call. The only other printing of the text was in the later 1908 Collected Works in Verse and Prose. The Golden Helmet is a notable Yeats rarity: of the 50 copies printed, two were entered in the Library of Congress on 9 June 1908, 25 are recorded by OCLC as being held in libraries worldwide, and the remaining few very seldom come up for sale - there have only been two at auction in the past 30 years. Wade A74; Foster, vol. 1, p. 27.
