The earliest atlases published in Europe were editions of Claudius Ptolemy's Geographia, compiled about 150 A.D. This version appeared in La Geografia di Clavdio Tolomeo Alessandrino, già tradotta di Greco in Italiano., edited by Ruscelli; this large pocket format (quarto) edition of Ptolemy's Geographia proved particularly popular, appearing in multiple editions over a period of forty years (1561 to 1599).
