Howard Fast (1914 - 2003) was an American novelist and television writer. Fast worked for the US government during WW II. He was jailed in 1950 for refusing to reveal the contributors (for an orphan home fund) to the House Committee on Un-American Activities. During this three-month sentence he began writing Spartacus. Because he was blacklisted after his release from prison, he was forced to self-publish, with the initial print run of only 2,500 copies. Seven more print runs in the next several months ran the total up to about 50,000, still a relatively small number. This book was made into the famous movie of the same name in 1960 starring Kirk Douglas and Jean Simmons, directed by Stanley Kubrick and it won four Academy Awards [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]
