Thomas Whittaker, New York, 1882. Original blue publisher's cloth with gilt-lettered spine title. viii, [4], 352, [6- publisher advts] pp, plus portrait frontis of Crummell, with tissue guard. Inner hinge cracked, text clean and Very Good. Crummell was a Black Episcopal clergyman. As the postscript to his celebrated pamphlet, 'The Duty of a Rising Christian State.' [1856] explains, He was "of unmixed African extraction, well known to the Colored People of New York and Boston." Having traveled to England "to obtain the means of erecting a house of worship for a Protestant Episcopal congregation of Colored People in New York," he then became a missionary to Liberia. When this book was published Crummell was Rector of St. Luke's Church in Washington, D.C. The Bishop of Rhode Island, Thomas M. Clark, writes the Introduction, a laudatory biography of the author.
