[Blythe Ritichie]
[INDIA-PHOTOGRAPHY] The photograph Album of Lieutenant Blythe Ritichie of the 15th Hussars. [circa 1900-1905].
India & England: Self-Publihsed, 1900. Scrapbook. Very Good. Hardcover. ---------A powerfully complex and multilayered album regarding the history of the 15th Hussars in addition to the life and times of the Edwardian period; India; Sport and Hunting. ---------- From laid-in correspondence it has been established that the compiler named "Self" was Lieutenant Blythe Ritichie of the 15th Hussars. Ritichie was of the wealthy class revealed by a large mansion house with a new Renault touring car and a large motor bike taken while he was on leave. He also appears to have been a keen small arms shot as he is pictured twice as the captain and as part of a team that won a large silver cup. There are parade scenes with elephants and the Viceroy, pig sticking hunts, the regiment mounted on the march and at maneuvers. -------- Many of the photos are remarkable due to the size of 15 photos 8.5 by 11 [some slightly larger]; and numerous 6 by 10 inches. --------- Of particular interest in the history of the Hussars are an original photograph of all the Regiments' Officer Mess silver with its original plinths of which many have become lost. ---------- Contemporary half morocco, cloth sides. 11.5 by 15.75 inches (29 x 40 cm); with approximately 180 albumen prints, 45 gelatin silver prints, 6 pen and ink drawings of trophy heads of game, 13 postcards; many images captioned in ink. Some wear, minor soiling, chipping to edges of album pages, the images generally excellent. ----------- A large and interesting album of photographs of Lieutenant Ritchie's life in India and elsewhere.
