Oxford, Printed by J. L. [John Lichfield] Printer to the University, for Thomas Huggins, 1633. Third edition of this title first published 1605. Small quarto, 14.5 x 18.5 cm, [2], [1]-166, 169-335, [1] (agree to ESTC S100514). Full calf with blind ruled boards, four raised bands, leather title piece (newer?), edges powdered red. Internally very good, pages clean with a few ink notes in an early hand, mainly correcting grammar spelling and typos. Monogram to title page, pastedowns replaced. Francis Bacon (1561-1626) was one of the great philosophers of his period, as well as being a high ranking statesman. This book was the first of those he wrote which resulted in what is known as the Baconian Method, essentially the foundation of empiricism, which dominates scientific thinking today.
