The Picture of New-York; or the Traveller's Guide Through the Commercial Metropolis of the United States. By a Gentleman Residing in the City
I. Riley and Co, New York, 1807. 16mo. Gilt lined contemporary black leather with raised bands, inner dentelles, 223pp. This is the earliest known guide book of the City. The beautiful frontispiece plan was engraved by Peter Maverick. The pre-commissioners map shows intended land fill expansion by William Bridges. There are 38 references to help the traveler navigate. Plan has been lined with a repair to the upper right margin, some stains to margin and cropping. Hard to find.
