Photo Album]
Photos of Swaziland and South Africa by Joseph Raucher, Photographer. [our title]
1890. 24 albumen photos mounted (pasted down) one to a page on both sides of 12 album leaves. Photos generally about 20 x 15.5cm. Undated but 1880s or 1890s. Oblong album about 31 x 24cm. "Photographs" printed in gilt on front cover. Album faded around edges but otherwise sound. "J. Raucher, Cosmopolitan Photographer" stamped on purple in lower right corner of front pastedown. High quality professional photographs. A few are slightly faded but otherwise have excellent detail. Brief ink caption on album page beneath each photo. A prudish former owner had put ink scribbles over the six unclothed (or partially unclothed) bodies in the final picture ("Zulu Chiefs") but has left untouched the six who were fully clothed -- another picture titled "Swazi Natives" has similar ink scribbles over the upper portion of the torso of a partially unclothed woman. One can see clearly that the second photo was reproduced from a cracked negative. List of Inked Captions: (1) Middlebury Falls; (2) King's Kraal, Swaziland; (3) Moben Drift, Swaziland; (4) Town Hall Durban; (5) Lydenburg Falls; (6) Swazi Natives; (7) Carter House; (8) Street in Delagoa; (9) Transvaal Consulate, Delagoa; (10) Prince Imperial's Tomb; (11) British Consulate Swaziland; (12 & 13) Komati Gold Fields; (14) Amajuba; (15) Mdineba(?); (16) Cambane Kraal; (17) "My Queen" Gold Mine; (18) Botchabelo Mission Station; (19) Alluvial Wash; (20) Pigg's Peak; (21) Islandhleoain Battlefield; (22) Unsoli River; (23) Garden at Hotel Embekalwina, Swaziland; and (24) Zulu Chiefs.
