DOYLE, [Sir] Arthur Conan (1859-1930), [WILES, Frank, illustrator]
The Valley of Fear
London: Smith, Elder & Co., 1915. [Sherlock Holmes] FIRST UK EDITION. Octavo (20 x 14cm), pp.[8] 306 [6]. With a black and white frontispiece illustrated by Wiles. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spine and upper. Quite heavy spotting throughout, with toned edges and a strong tobacco scent. An unusually fresh, bright example of the cloth, with a few minor splash stains to lower board, and some toning to spine. Very good. The fourth and final full-length Sherlock Holmes novel, being a retrospective or 'flashback' adventure set in Pennsylvania, 1888. 'The Valley of Fear' is also notable for the involvement of Holmes' arch-nemesis Professor Moriarty.
