Large, heavy folios, second edition (first was a limited edition published in 1976, blue cloth boards with silver and green stamped lettering to spines, slipcased. This is an 11-volume set, supplemented with a 12th volume that was part of the first edition but published independently of Kodansha for the second edition. The odd volume, covering the Victoria & Albert collection, came out two years before the Kodansha series in English only, while all of the others are in English and Japanese. This odd volume was not issued with a slipcase, but has a dust jacket instead. Arntzen & Rainwater P358, commenting on the first edition: "A series of 12 expensively-produced volumes which contain glossy color and black-and-white reproductions of outstanding pieces of oriental ceramics in some of the world's most renowned collections. . Each volume is compiled by a leading authority, who is generally the curator in charge of the collection represented. In addition to the V&A collection, the volumes cover collections at: 1.
